In a tense diplomatic turn, China has issued a stern warning to Thailand, urging it to avoid any military action that could endanger Chinese personnel or assets stationed at the Ream Naval Base in Cambodia. The warning follows reports of escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, with Thai airstrikes recently targeting Cambodian military positions along the border.
The Ream Naval Base, located on Cambodia’s southern coast, has drawn significant international attention in recent years due to Chinese military involvement and reported upgrades funded by Beijing. While Cambodia has maintained that the base is for its own defense purposes, satellite imagery and intelligence assessments from Western nations suggest a growing Chinese naval footprint at the facility.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian emphasized Beijing’s commitment to protecting its overseas interests, stating, “The Ream Naval Base is a legitimate cooperative endeavor between China and Cambodia. Any threat or hostile action against Chinese personnel or infrastructure will be met with serious consequences.”
The Thai government has yet to respond officially to China’s warning. However, regional analysts are concerned that the situation could spiral into a broader conflict if not carefully managed. Thailand has accused Cambodia of harboring armed groups near the border and claims recent military strikes were defensive in nature.
ASEAN member states and international observers are calling for de-escalation, urging both nations to engage in dialogue and avoid drawing external powers into a localized dispute. The presence of Chinese military assets in Cambodia adds a complex layer to the conflict, potentially transforming it from a bilateral border dispute into a flashpoint in the broader Asia-Pacific strategic rivalry.
With tensions rising and no signs of immediate resolution, the region watches anxiously as diplomatic and military maneuvers unfold.
