President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to contractors and public officials involved in financial irregularities, particularly those identified as having received double payments from government contracts. According to the president, his administration will not condone such misconduct and is taking steps to ensure accountability and the recovery of misused public funds.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Jubilee House, President Mahama stated that preliminary audits and reviews by the Auditor-General and other oversight institutions have revealed instances where some contractors were paid twice for the same project or service.
“This is a serious breach of financial discipline and a direct abuse of the public purse,” President Mahama said. “Let me be clear: any contractor found guilty of receiving double payments will be dealt with accordingly. The law will take its full course, regardless of status or affiliation.”
The president emphasized that under his leadership, Ghana will maintain a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and financial mismanagement. He assured the public that steps are being taken to strengthen procurement oversight, enhance digital payment tracking systems, and ensure tighter controls within government departments and agencies.
He further added, “We are not on a witch hunt, but we must ensure that the right thing is done. Every cedi counts. The era of impunity is over.”
President Mahama also directed the Ministry of Finance and the Attorney General’s Department to collaborate with the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) and the Ghana Audit Service to recover any funds that were wrongfully paid.
The announcement has been met with praise from civil society groups, anti-corruption advocates, and concerned citizens who have long called for more decisive action against public sector corruption. Many have urged the president to follow through with his words and ensure that prosecutions are swift and transparent.
As Ghana faces economic challenges and rising demands for improved infrastructure and social services, President Mahama’s renewed commitment to safeguarding public funds sends a strong signal that fiscal responsibility will be a top priority in his administration.
